IPL 2026 Rules & Regulations – Complete Guide
The Indian Premier League 2026 follows official playing conditions set by the BCCI, combining standard T20 cricket laws with IPL-specific innovations. From the Impact Player substitution system to Strategic Time-outs and over-rate penalties, understanding these rules is essential for fans and fantasy players alike. Here is the definitive breakdown of every IPL 2026 rule you need to know.
Match Format & Points System
All IPL 2026 matches follow the T20 format – 20 overs per side. The team scoring more runs wins. If scores are tied, a Super Over decides the result. Rain-affected matches use the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method.
- Win: 2 points
- Loss: 0 points
- No Result: 1 point
- Tie-breaker: Net Run Rate (NRR)
Powerplay & Fielding Restrictions
During the first 6 overs (Powerplay), only 2 fielders are allowed outside the 30-yard circle. For the remaining 14 overs, up to 5 fielders can be positioned outside the circle. If teams fall behind the over-rate, additional fielding restrictions kick in as a penalty.
Impact Player Rule
One of the most talked-about IPL innovations, the Impact Player rule allows teams to make one tactical substitution per match:
- Teams nominate 5 substitutes 30 minutes before the toss
- One substitute can replace a starting XI member at over breaks, after wickets, or between innings
- The replaced player exits permanently and cannot return
- If an overseas Impact Player is used, the starting XI must have only 3 overseas players
- No mid-over substitutions are permitted
Decision Review System (DRS)
Each team gets 2 DRS reviews per innings in IPL 2026. Reviews can be taken within 15 seconds of the umpire's decision. Technology includes ball-tracking, ultra-edge, and real-time snicko. From 2023 onwards, wides and no-balls can also be reviewed. Umpire's call outcomes do not consume a review.
Strategic Time-outs
IPL 2026 retains its unique two time-out system per innings:
- 1st Time-out (Overs 6–9): Taken by the bowling team – 2 minutes 30 seconds
- 2nd Time-out (Overs 13–16): Taken by the batting team – 2 minutes 30 seconds
Neither can be postponed, cancelled, or combined. They proceed even if a wicket falls during the window.
Over-Rate Penalties
Bowling teams must start the 20th over within 90 minutes of the innings beginning (excluding authorized breaks). Failure results in an immediate penalty: only 4 fielders allowed outside the circle for the remaining overs. Captains receive warnings at over 15 if behind schedule.
Two Bouncers Per Over
Since 2024, IPL allows 2 bouncers per over (deliveries above shoulder height). A third bouncer in the same over is called a no-ball with a free hit on the next delivery. Deliveries above head height are automatic no-balls regardless of bouncer count.
Overseas Player Limits
- Maximum 8 overseas players in a 25-player squad
- Maximum 4 overseas players in the starting XI at any point
- If an overseas Impact Player enters, the starting XI must have begun with only 3 overseas players
Playing XI Declaration
Teams have flexibility: they can submit their XI before the toss (locking in early) or within 10 minutes after the toss (adjusting for conditions). Most teams use post-toss declarations to optimize their lineup based on pitch conditions and toss outcome.
New Training Rules for IPL 2026
The BCCI introduced stricter practice regulations to preserve pitch quality:
- Practice sessions limited to 3–3.5 hours
- Fresh practice pitches required – no sharing between teams
- 4-day square blackout before first home game
- Maximum 2 warm-up matches before the season
- Practice matches under lights capped at 3.5 hours
Super Over Rules
- Each team bats 1 over if scores are tied
- Multiple Super Overs can be played if still tied
- In playoffs, the higher-placed team progresses if a match cannot be completed
